3 Kenyan politicians who have never lost an election in over 20 years

They have dominated the country’s political scene for decades. And in all the elections they have taken part in, they have never lost any poll in over 20 years.

Going to the next general election in 2022, these are the men to watch as they look set to continue dominating the local political scene.

Since making his political debut in 1997, Deputy President William Ruto has simply refused to leave the stage.

After defeating Reuben Chesire to win the Eldoret North MP seat in that year’s election, Ruto has steadily risen in the country’s political arena.

He followed his 1997 political debut win with a comfortable re-election in 2002, 2007 and 2013 where he was elected Deputy President alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta before winning a second term in 2017.
In short, Dr Ruto has never tasted defeat in five elections he has participated in.

Since he was elected MP in 1992, Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has gone undefeated in six elections.

He served as MP until 2013 when he was elected Meru Senator before winning Governor in 2017 as he sent home incumbent, Peter Munya.

Going forward, the veteran politician may not just leave the stage any time soon and his opponents should brave themselves for bitter battle if they are to hand the 68-year old Murungi his first poll defeat.

Then there is Vihiga Senator George Khaniri. At just 24 years, he was elected MP in 1996 following the death of his father. Since then, he has never looked back. Six elections without defeat is no mean achievement.

Now in his second term as Senator, the 2022 poll will no doubt present him with another perfect opportunity to extend his dominance in Kenya’s politics. Or will he finally taste defeat? Time will tell.
