With slightly over two years remaining to the next general election, the country’s political heavyweights are readying themselves for a ferocious political contest.
Just as in the past, the presidential election is expected to be hotly contested with Deputy President William Ruto seen by many as the front runner in the President Uhuru Kenyatta succession battle.
If he does for the country’s top seat, who are Ruto’s possible running mates to deliver him victory?
Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi will no doubt be Ruto’s first obvious choice for running mate position.
The DP’s recent moves suggest that he could be courting the former Vice President for a political deal. And if indeed they join hands for a joint presidential ticket come 2022, the Ruto-Mudavadi ticket will be unstoppable considering that the former Sabatia MP is a political force in his own rights.
Then there is Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. Though he has declared his allegiance to President Kenyatta, the DP is keen for a political deal with the former Vice President, with one-time Machakos Senator Johnston Muthama trying to broker a Ruto-Kalonzo alliance. If it does finally happen, the ticket will easily win the 2022 race to State House.
Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri is another man widely believed to be a front runner for the DP’s running mate. Now seen as Dr Ruto’s Mount Kenya point man, Kiunjuri can easily be used by the DP as a political bait to win Central region’s support come the next poll.
