CHARLES NJONJO AT 100!

Kenya’s first attorney general, Charles Njonjo is celebrating his 100th birthday today. “The Duke of Kabeteshire” as he is popularly known, is the only surviving member of the Kenya’s first cabinet 1963.He served in the regimes of the first president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel
Mr Njonjo who married at the age of 50, joined parliament in April 1980 after retiring as attorney general at the age of 60, a post in which he had served for 17 years. He was later elected as Kikuyu Member of Parliament and in 1980, he was selected for a newly created cabinet position by President Moi as minister for Home and constitutional affairs .
In his eloquent birthday message, Mr.Njonjo confirms the many congratulations and best wishes he has received from around the world.
“First of all my wonderful wife and life companion, Margaret, followed by my children. The family has grown. I have also had the greatest joy and privilege of grandchildren. To date six of them all of whom have had the most uplifting effect on my energy and love for life and for this I’m truly grateful to God, I thank you all again,” he said.
He talks of how he has dedicated many hours of his life to numerous churches, social enterprise and educational institution such as the Alliance high school, the Kenya high school and Starehe boys centre.
