Few years after the pomp and coloured launch, the owners of Slopes Media company that operates MT Kenya TV and Iganjo FM have thrown in the towel in this competitive media industry.
Andrew Ngirichi, the husband to Kirinyaga Woman rep Purity Wangui Ngirichi seems to have realized that running media house is not walk in the park trying by all means but failed miserably.
We still believe that MT Kenya TV and Iganjo FM came up with a wrong motive of fighting the dynasties of Inooro TV,Inooro FM,Kameme Tv and Kameme FM.
These media houses had the resources ,the audience and their programming had already resonated so well with their viewers and listeners. It was no doubt that the new Kid on the block then (MT Kenya TV and Iganjo FM) had a lot of catching up to do.
A month after the launch, Ngirichi who had in many instances bragged that he was out to teach media guru S.K.Macharia a lesson found himself struggling with cash issues failing to even remit employees salaries. This led to massive resignation and firing in equal measure.
The company had poached some of the best talents from Royal Media Services and Mediamax. The poached officials were given promises of hefty perks but to their dismay, the hefty perks remained just that….a Promise.
Salaries took forever, their houses were closed, they had no food, some resulted to sharing rooms and sex became the consolation. To date, the company runs on a zero budget, interns literally run the station as it slowly turned to a shell of itself. Sensing defeat and out of desperation, the owners recently put up an advert on a news paper selling the station and by good luck a Somali tycoon has taken over.
Whether the station will stick to MT Kenya audience or change to a national language so as to reach more people remains a wait and see thing.
Employees who had been left in the media house hanging on a thread are in suspense not knowing what will become of their fate or if it could be their silver lining on a dark cloud.
Our writer has information that the new owner has promised to bring an overhaul change in the management as he tests the waters.
Our sources tell us that new Overall Company Manager will be Kiama Kariuki who currently works with Former CS Mwangi Kiunjuri’s TSP. Kiama is long serving journalist having worked at MediaMax and Royal Media Services. We wish them all the best as they try to re-vamp the fallen media.
